We’ve all been there – hair done, nails done, makeup done, and rush out to make it to that date or social event. Only to find that we weren’t quite careful enough and now we have smudged our mascara!

It’s easy to do, and doesn’t look great at all. If this has happened to you a few times, we’ve got you covered with some tips on how to prevent mascara from smudging.

What is Mascara and Why Does it Smudge?

Mascara is a great way to help thicken, lengthen and embolden your eyelashes in order to bring more attention to your eyes. It’s made from black pigments bonded together by a polymer and thickened with various waxes or oils. It’s a go to makeup that even if you have time for nothing else, mascara and lipstick go a long way! Because of the oils and waxes, if your lashes are coming into contact with your skin and natural skin oils then mascara will typically smudge and leave marks on your skin.

1.   Clean Your Skin First

A good solution, however, not a complete one, to stop smudging is to clean your skin with baby wipes or other sensitive skin wipe, before applying mascara. This will remove the natural skin oils so that for the duration of your mascara wearing, your lashes will be less likely to smudge when coming into contact with your skin.

2.   Avoid Creams

Face creams might be good for dry skin or other issues, but they create oily and slippery skin surfaces that don’t bode well for your mascara. You can try using gels, powders or matted textures instead of creams, if you need to use these products.

3.   Have Blotting Papers/ Tissues Handy

If you often have smudged mascara it can be due to oily eyelids. Naturally, our eyelids produce oils which aid in their movement – blinking etc. The Australian summer often tends to get quite hot and humid and so this problem can be exacerbated with sweat too. I always recommend keeping some kind of blotting paper in your purse or handbag to dab away any excess moisture or oil.

4.   Use Eye Primer

Many people choose to use eye primer, but this is especially useful for those of us with oily eyelids. Use as step one of your eye makeup routine and lay a base of smudge resistant primer and relax so that your mascara will not smudge.

5.   Try Applying Bottom to Top

Ever since you first used mascara, we have always been shown to go from top lashes to bottom lashes. However, when experimenting with going bottom to top we have found that mascara doesn’t smudge so easily! We also tried waiting a minute or so between lids and coats – to allow it to dry in between.

6.   Get Extensions

One of the quickest, simplest, healthiest and most economical solutions is to get eyelash extensions. Let someone else do the hard work – and you can go to town on applying moisturising creams and solutions, you don’t have to add primer, you don’t have to carry blotting paper, and you certainly don’t have to remember which eyelid to do first.

We still recommend you clean your face regularly though!

no smudging with extensions

Extensions means no smudging and no need to use mascara everyday.

Smudged mascara is never a great look – and it can be very hard to prevent.

If you want to wear mascara, then follow the first 5 tips.

I found after a while that it added so much time to my daily makeup routine that I looked for other options. So, I ended up getting my extensions and never needed to wear mascara again…works like a charm every time.
